It’s time for vacation, you have everything planned, you’re packed and just have to hit the road. You will probably have a great vacation. But, if you want to take your trip to the next level and have an extraordinary vacation full of great memories that you will never forget, then follow these five steps that I have learned over the years. I travel much differently today than when I first started.
1. Be flexible
If something comes up that wasn’t initially on your itinerary, but sounds interesting, DO IT. These often times are the most fun, give you the most cultural insight, and allow you to meet other people.
2. Try not to worry
You can probably think of a million troubling “what if” situations. You might miss your bus, the restaurant you want to go to might not have any open reservations, the museum might be closed the day you decide to go. Yes, sometimes these mishaps happen, but they also can end up being some of the best stories and memories. So instead, try to think of all the positive things that are going to happen. If something does end up going wrong, remember the point above – Be flexible!
3. Be friendly
Encountering nice people on your trip will leave you with better memories. People are 10x more likely to be nice to you if you are nice to them, so remember to smile and be kind with your words. Don’t give in to cultural stereotypes. A lot of times bad interactions are caused by misunderstandings in the first place, so assume that someone misunderstood you, smile and start again.
4. Ask questions
If you don’t know where you are, don’t know what time the train leaves, or can’t find the restaurant you are looking for, then ask someone! Swallow your pride and save your time and money.
Ask locals about where they would go for dinner or to spend the day. You will find some hidden gems this way.
5. Be open to new things
This could go for food ,drink, activities, or experiences. You may hate it, but you will never know unless you try it, and who knows, you may find a new favorite thing.
Things that you wouldn’t consider normal are often what distinguishes one culture from another. Try something new and be enlightened!
